Glossary of types of apartments for rent in Ottawa
Looking through apartment listings can be a rather confusing. What exactly are the differences between a junior one bedroom and studio alcove? A convertible with three bedrooms and a flex of two bedroom? Knowing available each type of housing and what are the characteristics of each type contains greatly improve your chances of finding the perfect rental apartment for your needs and your lifestyle.
Walk-Up Apartment / Low-Rise Apartment
A Walk-Up or low rise apartment is located in a building that does not have an elevator (which means it can be a bit harder when you're away). Walk-ups are usually older buildings that are less than five storeys and May were not many facilities such as laundry rooms, storage cabinets or wheelchair accessibility. Generally, the monthly rent for an appointment up cheaper than the monthly rent for an apartment tower.
High-Rise Apartment
A high-rise apartment is located in a building that is generally six or more storeys high. High rise apartment buildings have elevators and often have laundry facilities, swimming pools, fitness centers, comprehensive fire alarm systems and security systems to control entry and exit of tenants. In addition, many blocks of high rise apartments feature management staff on hand to assist you in an emergency.
Bachelor Apartment / Studio Apartment
A great choice for students, a studio (also called a studio apartment, efficiency) is a small one-bedroom apartment with a separate bathroom. The piece serves as bedroom, dining room and living room and is often linked an open kitchen. Bachelor apartments can range from very small (just large enough for a sofa bed and desk) to very large (with enough room for a king-size bed and separate lounge and dining area).
A bachelor alcove (also called a baccalaureate convertible or convertible studio) is generally configured in an L-shape with a distinct area or a corner to eat or sleep.
1-Bedroom Apartments
A one bedroom apartment comprises a living room, kitchen, bathroom and separate room equipped with built in cupboard. Occupation may often be limited to two people.
A junior one bedroom means usually a flat non-major studio that is large enough to isolate a zone or in the separate bedroom.
2 Bedrooms Apartments
A full two-bedroom apartment has two bedrooms plus a living room. It may or may not have a separate kitchen. Room sizes vary greatly, from the room of a baby or a small office in an extra-large master bedroom suite.
A convertible two-bedroom apartments (sometimes called "Flex 2") is actually an apartment with one bedroom, but it is large enough and arranged in such so that a wall could be put in place to create a second bedroom. Similarly, a convertible three-bedroom (or "flex 3") is a two-bedroom apartments apartment that can be converted into 3 bedrooms.
A flat wing usually has two bedrooms and a small common area as a dining in the kitchen, but no living room. These apartments are ideal for students or roommates who do not require much in the way space common life.
Loft
A loft can be classified as a large open space with few internal walls. Usually the result of a commercial building has been converted into residential lofts are usually very high ceilings, extra-large windows and are often exposed plumbing pipes and columns.
Penthouse Apartment
A penthouse is an apartment on the top floor of an apartment building, usually with additional balcony or terrace roof. A penthouse is usually considered more luxurious and is highly desirable (but expensive) place to live.
Basement Apartment
As its name suggests, an apartment in the basement is the lowest floor of a building and is partially underground. Windows and high ceilings are enforced by city codes. This type of apartment may also refer the basement of a house that was converted into an apartment. This type of basement apartment may have its own separate entrance and may have its own bathroom, kitchen, laundry and heating system separate from the rest of the house.
Duplex
A duplex apartment with two levels. This could include a true bi-level with an apartment upstairs and attached the bottom, or it could also be an open space with high ceilings and a loft or mezzanine.
Railroad Flat
In an apartment of the railway, there is no hallway. This type of apartment consists of a series of pieces that are connected to each other in a straight line (like the cars of a train), which means a tenant will have to walk through each room to get from one end the apartment to another.
Balcony / Terrace
Under the balcony and terrace are often used interchangeably to refer to a platform of rails extending from outside the apartment. It may be small enough to accommodate one or two people standing or large enough for a table picnic, chairs and plants.
